    ✽   What is NZ's Student Visa ?

    Options at a Glance

    Fee-Paying International Students:

New Zealand warmly welcomes fee-paying international students. With a strong commitment to excellence in education, the country offers a broad range of well-established programs and support services designed to ensure an exceptional academic and lifestyle experience. The New Zealand government places particular emphasis on enrolling international students into high-quality, accredited tertiary institutions that meet rigorous standards.

    The student visa applicant must:

✔ Hold a formal offer of a place from an approved education provider, such as a State Institution or “Private Training Establishment” (PTE) (See special note, below).

    ✔ Pay full international fees.

✔ Have sufficient funds for support or be sponsored.

    ✔ Hold comprehensive Health Insurance.

✔ Satisfy Immigration New Zealand (INZ) that they are a genuine student (not using a student visa application for some other purpose).

✔ Be of good health and character.

    Special note #1

    Recognized Education Providers

To be eligible for a New Zealand student visa, you must receive an offer from a reputable education provider. Only institutions that have committed to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 qualify. These include registered schools, universities, polytechnics, and private training establishments (PTEs) that hold NZQA Category 1, 2 or 3 status. (Category 4 providers are excluded.)

    Special note #2

    Work Privileges During Study

Many eligible international students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time, and full-time during scheduled breaks. This offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable local experience and enhance language skills. However, not all courses include these work rights, so tailored advice is essential.

    School-Aged Children

New Zealand offers a world-class education system, welcoming international students from primary through to secondary levels. Both public and private schools are available, each required to meet high standards of academic excellence and pastoral care. These institutions must be officially approved to ensure the wellbeing of every student—academically, socially, and personally.

    〉Guardian Visa

Parents or legal guardians of children aged 17 or younger may be eligible to accompany their child to New Zealand on a Guardian Visa. In certain cases, guardians may also receive permission to work or study during their stay, providing valuable support throughout their child’s educational journey.

    〉Dependent Child Student Visa

This visa allows dependent children to study at a primary, intermediate, or secondary school in New Zealand, joining a parent who holds a valid work or student visa. Eligible children may be classified as domestic students, meaning public school tuition fees are waived—an exceptional benefit for families seeking long-term settlement. (Note: This domestic status does not extend to tertiary-level study.)

    English Language Schools

Renowned globally for its immersive and effective English language programs, New Zealand offers over 600 English language learning options. Whether you're seeking foundational training for children or advanced academic preparation for university admission, there’s a pathway tailored to your goals. Many institutions offer hybrid programs that blend language learning with travel, culture, or academic bridging.

    Tertiary Studies

For students pursuing university degrees or advanced diplomas, New Zealand boasts internationally respected institutions and a quality-assured academic environment. Recent reforms by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) and the NZ Qualifications Authority (NZQA) ensure a high-quality, globally competitive education experience across all tertiary providers.

    〉Pathway Student Visa

The Pathway Student Visa enables students to enroll in up to three consecutive programs of study on a single visa—ideal for those planning a long-term academic journey in New Zealand. To qualify, students must receive an offer from an approved education provider and demonstrate financial readiness for tuition and living expenses.

    Domestic Student Concession

Children of parents holding valid New Zealand work visas may qualify to study at primary, intermediate, or secondary school as domestic students—exempt from international tuition fees. This significant advantage is one to consider when planning your family’s relocation. Note: This concession does not apply to tertiary-level study. Similar exemptions may apply to families associated with diplomatic missions, military transfers, or specific postgraduate categories.
